Hey, Hey Water Polo!

The Tigers hosted Milken Community coming out very strong after the semester exam break!  Andrea Risolo ’12 scored five goals!!  Clare Schneider ’13 and Amanda Matthiessen ’13 added three!! And, Chelsea Burke-Gomez ’13 had one!  The Tigers WON 12-10!!!  Nice 🙂

MS Basketball Shines!

From Coach Jason:

“After showing considerable improvement every game thus far, both the Green and the White Teams showed us some great basketball yesterday at High Point. The Green Team took the win 39 – 18 with everyone getting in on the scoring. The White Team also closed out the Eagles in a nail biter winning by a score of 4 – 2, now that’s what I call good defense! Great work White Team!

Nayyirah Islam drained the first three point shot of the Tigers campaign vs. Poly and while we lost that one the tigers showed us their potential playing an amazing second half.

In today’s first home game the confidence from the wins yesterday was showing, and both teams showed lots of passion. Ultimately the Green Team managed to hold off the Rio Hondo Kares by a score of 24 – 22 in a game that went right down to the very last shot. Leading scorers, Stephanie Davis (8 Points) and Juliana Favela (7 Points) were on top form while the rest of the team rallied around them to play some fabulous DEFENSE! Next week we have one game and lots of time to practice as we prepare for the final stretch of the season and with the win today, hopefully the play-offs!”

Go Middle School Tigers!!!

Student-Athletes

Our Tigers were all burning the midnight oil this week in preparation for mid-year exams.   Healthy competition, but only with pen and paper.   After a long weekend, I’m certain the Tigers will be ready to roll!

Water Polo Plays Best Game of the Season!

The Tigers faced the Flintridge Prep Rebels in a “sister” showdown.  Haley Phillips ’14 sister is a member of the Flintridge Prep team and her older sister and Westridge alumna, Lauren, is now assisting the Tigers as a coach!

Our team down 8 goals at the half, made an extraordinary come-back!  While the Tigers lost 11-14, the victory was clearly ours!  Leading the scoring effort was standout Andrea Risolo ’12 with NINE goals!!!!

Congratulations, water polo, on taking it to the next level!

Injuries Plague Key Players

Thursday was a dark day for varsity soccer and basketball.  Soccer faced Poly and lost both Tatum Mannion ’14 and Claire Davis ’13 midway during the game.  The Tigers not only lost the game, but are very concerned about getting their soccer superstars back soon!

Basketball played one of the best games of the season against Rio Hondo Prep.  After a blistering 8-0 run beginning of the 4th quarter (and a 12 point lead), leading scorer and rebounder Carmen Costa ’14 left the game with a back injury with just over five minutes remaining.  The Tigers tried to hold on, but two 3-point shots and a couple calls going the Kares way, left the Tigers stunned 44-49.  Three Tigers scored in double figures – Erin Golden ’14 and Lili Lim ’13 and Carmen Costa ’14 had 11 apiece.  Carmen added 16 rebounds and 5 blocked shots!

Rest up, Tigers!

Erica Wu ’13 Wins Table Tennis Nationals!

From Erica –

At Nationals, (12/13-17) I played Women’s Doubles with one of my coaches, Gao Jun. We won! It was my first National title. Of course, a lot of the credit goes to my coach. Coach Gao is an amazing player and doubles partner; at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, she won silver in the doubles event! Her experience really made my job easier 🙂

In Women’s Singles, I made it to semifinals, which is the farthest I’ve ever gotten to. It’s exciting, but unfortunately, neither that nor the doubles win helps me qualify for the Olympics. However, most of the players playing the Olympic trials were at Nationals, so it was great practice for the upcoming trials.

Ups and Downs on a Tuesday

Varsity soccer had their chance against Chadwick and nearly pulled off the upset of the first place Prep League team.  The Tigers were at 1-2 beginning of the second half and had some great looks.  Teamwork is looking much better and the girls are giving it everything they have.  Kudos to goalie Ashley Hebard ’13 on having some amazing saves!

Basketball hosted Le Lycee Francais.  One might wonder why the Tigers scheduled a game with the Los Angeles based French school, well it happened that the two schools met during Interim on Catalina Island — sounded like a good idea at the time.  The Tigers had a superb team effort and it didn’t take long for the Lions to feel the pressure.  The team combined for 24 steals in their 49-12 victory.  Merci beaucoup!

Friday the 13th

After a very tough week, the Tigers faced off against Flintridge Prep in JV soccer. La Salle in Water Polo and  Webb in basketball.  Soccer played focused and improved from their game on Tuesday, but scoring came a little hard as the Tigers fell 1-4.   Kalin Venable ’15 got both the Tigers goal and the “game ball” from the coach!  Great job, Kalin!

JV basketball gave the Gauls a run for their money as they were ahead 13-12 going into the 4th quarter.  Webb ended up being a little too tough as they outscored the Tigers 10-5.  Final score 22-18.  Leading the Tigers in scoring was senior Denise Henry with 6 points!

Water Polo going against a very, very strong La Salle squad had a hard time finding the goal.  While the wins aren’t coming quite yet, the team’s play is improving greatly.  Be patient Tigers fans, the wins will come soon!

Varsity basketball left no doubt as they began the game  jumping to a 10-0 lead in the 1st quarter!  The Tigers led 26-14 at the half and kept building the lead to end 51-21!  Leading for the Tigers was sophomore Carmen Costa with 16 points and 16 rebounds!  Lili Lim added 14 points and 4 steals!  Great team game as nearly all Tigers scored!
