Lower School Tennis a Real Hit!

Who knew over 40 tennis superstars were in our Lower School!  The excitement was overwhelming as the student organized event took flight at the Arroyo Racquet Club on Friday!  The girls were instructed by our Head JV Coach, Ginny Garofalo in addition to two tennis pros!  The learning was fun!  The enthusiasm off the charts!!!

Go, Lower School Tennis!!!

Dramatic Ending for Soccer vs. Webb

The Tigers came to play on Friday although three starters were still sidelined.  And, the Webb Gauls were not going to back down.  The Tigers held their own but were down 1-2 with minutes to play.  Out of nowhere defender Claire Davis ’13 pushed the ball ahead and scored a beautiful goal with her left placing in perfectly in the goal!!  The team was beaming as it appeared a tie (or better) would occur.  Then, the unexpected happened, those pesky Gauls tear-dropped the ball in the left corner just over our goalie’s head in the final seconds.  This time, Webb ended victorious at 3-2.  We have another chance…

Water Polo Shines!

The Tigers came to play today!  In their last meeting the Rebels pushed the Tigers to overtime, but not this time 😉  With true determination our team dominated the entire game and clinched the victory at 9-3!!  Leading for Westridge was Elena Vega-Fujioka ’13 with 4 goals!!  Chelsea Burke-Gomez ’13 added 3!!  Catherine Harrington ’14 and Clare Schneider ’13 added one each.

Congratulations, Water Polo!!

Basketball Gets it Done

The Tigers faced the Webb Gauls at home and left no doubt!  JV began by surging to a 18-5 halftime lead!  While Webb made a run in the 4th quarter, the Tigers prevailed ending 25-19!  Leading for the Tigers was Olivia Tayback ’15 with 8 points,! Not far behind was Dylan Jack ’15 with 6 and Bella Kachanon ’15 with 5!

Varsity began the game a bit off offensively, but looked super-charged on defense.  By the end of the first half the Tigers had a comfortable 24-9 lead.  The Gauls made a short run in the 3rd, but the Tigers turned up the volume!  Final score 47-22!!  Birthday Girl, Carmen Costa ’14, led all scores with 15 points and 17 rebounds — Happy Birthday to you, Carmen!!!  Erin Golden ’14 went 4 for 7 behind the arc for 12 points (again, please don’t tell the Lakers)!  The team celebrated with fun birthday cupcakes (see below)!

JV Basketball is now 6-3 overall and Varsity is 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the Prep League!!!  The best start for both teams in a very long time!!

Soccer Monday

The MS Green Team faced Flintridge Prep and won!  Here is a quote from Coach Nick Hazel:

“We had a very close game against a good Prep side but everyone on the team worked their socks off for the win!  The goal came right after half-time from Olivia Matthiessen ’17, who was one of several standout performers.  Proud of them!”  Final score Tigers 1, Prep 0!!

Varsity Soccer had a very close game against Mayfield, but ended 2-3.  Props to Christine Ulin ’13 for covering the goalie position as our starting goalie, Ashley Hebard ’13 was home ill.   Scoring for the Tigers was Emma Hovanec ’16 and Whitney White ’14!  JV Soccer lost to the Cubs as well 1-3.  Charlotte Stephens ’16 had the sole goal for the Tigers.  Don’t worry, Tigers, we’ll get them next time!

Equestrian Endures

Being at Hansen Dam Equestrian Center before dawn on a 30 degree morning isn’t for everyone, but our Equestrian superstars we’re ready to compete!  Our athletes and their horses were amazing to observe!  And, while I don’t have the final results as of yet, a few photos will help capture the excitement!

[Results will be posted when available.]

Homecoming Rules!

It doesn’t get much more exciting in “the Jungle” than on Homecoming Friday!  It was a thrill from the spirit assembly all the way through to the final game!  Kudos to our ASB reps and the Westridgettes for all their spirit and enthusiasm the entire day!!  And, a special thank you to our parent reps for organizing the halftime contests and overseeing the event!!  Woo hoo!

So, how did we do?

JV Soccer started the chilly day off with a strong effort however Maranatha’s offense was coming on strong.  The Tigers were down 0-2 at the half, but we able to fight back and get on the board!  Final score 1-2, but a strong effort for sure!

JV Basketball made it interesting against Chadwick with a highly unusual low scoring first half as the Tigers were barely down 4-5 at the half.  The offense finally started to take in the 3rd as the Tigers put 12 points on the board and led 16-11!  With the crowd behind them our mighty defenders were able to hold the Dolphins to 4 points in the 4th!  Final score 21-15!  Leading for Westridge was Dylan Jack ’15 with 8 points!! Bella Kachanon ’15 added 5 and Milan Benn ’15 had 4 points!  Way to go, JV!!!

Varsity Soccer seemed to be effected in the first half by the absence of  two important starters (Whitney White ’14 and Allie Schiffman ’13).  Heading into the half the Tigers were behind Maranatha 0-2.  But, with the energy of the alumnae in the House and Pie ‘n Burger wafting in the wind, our mighty team dug deep and began to come back!!  With defensive excellence the Tigers stopped the Minutmen cold in their tracks (pun intended) and ended 3-2!  Scoring for the Tigers was Julia Matthiessen ’13, Laura Medina ’15 and Emma Hovanec ’16 with Sammy Reich ’15 with an assist!!  Congratulations soccer for a spectacular come-from-behind victory!!!

Varsity Basketball ended the Homecoming excitement facing Chadwick.  With a newly minted full-court press the Tigers charged ahead and led 13-7 at the end of the first!  The team continued to surge and led 26-14 at the half.  Chadwick tried full-court pressure as well and was able to make a small gain, but Westridge kept “turning up the burners”.  At the end of the day the Tigers left victorious at 49-34!  Leading for the Tigers was Lili Lim ’13 and Carmen Costa ’14 with 10 points each!  Lili added 9 rebounds and 5 steals!  Carmen had 14 rebounds, 5 blocked shots and 4 assists!!  Basketball is currently 8-2 and 5-1 in the Prep League!

Congratulations Tigers on a splendid Homecoming in 2013!!!
