Spirit Game – Woo Hoo!

The MS Green Basketball team began the double-header with a major statement!  The Tigers looked impressive in their 38-17 victory and offered plenty of milk and cookies to keep the fans energized for the up-tempo game! Juliana Favela ’17 led all scorers (as well as Flintridge Prep) with 20 points!!  Stephanie Davis ’17 added 6!

Varsity kept the momentum from Tuesday and opened against AGBU Pasadena with an 18-4 first quarter effort!  The Tigers were ferocious as they ended the half at 35-4!   In the second half he Tigers cruised to a final 57-13 victory!  Olivia Tayback ’15 had her first appearance in a varsity game and within seconds of hitting the hardwoods sank her first jumper just inside the three point line!  Not intimidated, she did it again minutes later!!  THREE Tigers had double-doubles – Carmen Costa ’15 who played fewer than 16 minutes had 15 points and 12 rebounds!  Courtney Sloan ’13 added 11 points and 16 boards!!  Leading for the Tigers was freshman sensation Karina Sloan with 16 points and 10 rebonds!!!  Now, that’s what we’re talking about!

A special “shout-out” to our Tiger Cubs who rocked the House!!  We couldn’t have done it without you 😉

A grrrrrrrrrrrrreat spirit game indeed!

Varsity Soccer defeats Ramona Convent

Our Tigers regrouped after a tough loss against San Marino earlier in the week and the improvement continued throughout the game!  Julia Matthiessen ’14 scored TWO goals!!!  And, sophomore Nora Lansing added one!  The Tigers defeated Ramona Convent 3-0!

Nice!

Basketball Starts Strong

JV Basketball tipped off the season in style on Tuesday as they defeated Ramona Convent 37-8!  Leading for the Tigers was Olivia Tayback ’15 and Dylan Jack ’15 with 10 points each!  Not far behind was Bella Kachanon with 6!  Woo hoo!

Varsity Basketball kept the momentum as they surged to a halftime lead against the Tiger (yes, Ramona Convent has our mascot too) at 33-12!  Our Tigers kept the heat on and ended at 50-20!!  Lili Lim ’13 led all scores with 14 points!! Carmen Costa ’14 added 11 points and a game high 14 rebounds!

Happy day 😉

A Shining Star

Maral Tavitian ’13 defined what in means to “leave it on the court”.  I’ve never seen Maral back off from a challenge and today was no different.  Troy High School’s Brittanie Eraso was a force to be reckoned with — talk, very strong, and could blast the lines at will.  Our Tiger came out the first game and blasted back starting the series at 1-0.  However, Brittanie continued strong and through Maral’s incredible effort she began to accrue several unforced errors.  After the first set, Troy’s player was at 6-1.

Now, most players might have been intimidated or down on themselves, but not our Maral.  Our Tiger fought back, and fought back hard!  Leading the second set at 5-1 in looked like a breeze!  However, each and every point lasted a very long time.  In the end of the second Maral held on for the victory at 6-4!!!

As two hours had already passed and almost all other matches were over, Maral had one more set before the final decision as to who would head to the CIF Round of 16.  I have to admit, I had to leave to coach our basketball team, but I heard from Coach Ginny and Coach Jerry that Maral continued to fight with everything she had.  While Maral was unable to seal the victory, she was the winner as she played the best high school match of her career!!

Maral can keep her head held high as she ended her high school career as one of the top 20 tennis players in the ENTIRE CIF Southern Section!!!  That’s over 520 schools, folks — THAT is truly amazing!!!!

Maral – we will miss you so very much next year!!  Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to Westridge Athletics!!!  I am so very proud you are (and will be for life) a Tiger!!!!

Maral Advances from Sectionals!

It was just announced that Maral will play on in the next round of CIF-SS Individual Playoffs on Tuesday, November 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Whittier Narrows Tennis Center!! A win on Tuesday will advance Maral to the Round of 32 in Seal Beach on Wednesday.

Good luck, Maral!!!

The next show is on Sunday, December 2 at Hansen Dam!

Go Equestrian!!

Excellence is not a Coincidence

What an amazing day for our Tigers!!  Kicking off the event in Carpinteria Amanda Matthiessen ’13 and Cameron Marsh ’14 played Santa Ynez in the first round of playoffs at Carpinteria High School!  While Santa Ynez took the first game, there wasn’t much in store thereafter as the Tigers played strong from game two forward.  While the score isn’t reflective of how many deuces the girls played, ending at 6-2, 6-3 is making a CIF statement!!!  After a brief rest the Tigers were back on the court facing the doubles team from Santa Barbara (after their league tournament, they placed their #2 and #3 singles players in doubles).  The Dons were hard hitters and placed the ball well.  Our Tigers fought hard, but were taken aback as they fell 1-6, 0-6.  That said, this was the first time both Amanda and Cameron advanced to CIF-SS Individual playoffs which is an extraordinary accomplishment!!!  Their success in the Prep League and throughout the season prepared them well for this challenge.  Congratulations to our doubles superstars!!  Special props to our senior, Amanda!!!

Maral Tavitian ’13 is no stranger to CIF-SS Individuals having competed as both a sophomore and a junior.  This year Maral was seeded #3 in the 32 team first round bracket!!  This was due to her #1 seeding in the Prep League (30-0) and her high rank in USTA juniors.  Coming off of a weekend trip and a long ride to Cate School this morning, Maral appeared to be a bit flat coming out 0-4 after a first round bye.  Her first opponent, Mady Snider from Cate School, didn’t have much of a commute.  However, all the intense training and mental preparation from years and years of committing to tennis enabled Maral to surge from behind and eventually win 6-4!!!  In the second set Maral was in stride winning in style at 6-0.  After a long break Maral then faced off against Westlake’s #1 player, Gianna Insogna .  This opponent was here to play as she blasted shot after shot down the line winning many points.  Maral’s greatest gift, in addition to her amazing tennis skills, is that of patience — she wears her opponents down with steady play matching their speed and countering their attacks.  Maral forced innumerable errors and the frustration across the net rose.  Winning the first set 6-2 in the final round is truly amazing!!  But, it gets better…after being down love-40 in the first game of the second set, Maral’s come from behind win deflated her opponent into no return.  Maral won 6-0!!!!!  AND, she is positioned to advance to the next round of tennis playoffs next week!!!  This is the first time Maral has advanced in her high school career!!!  Wednesday, November 21 at noon the final seedings will be announced.  Congratulations Maral!!!  And, a special thank you for all your hard work for so many years.  The Tigers are proud of you 😉

Our Freshman PR’s by nearly 3 minutes at CIF-SS Prelims!

Emma Hovanec represented the Tigers in superb style as she fought against the sub-60 temperature and some very fast runners!  Emma started strong and ended even stronger as she shaved off nearly three minutes from her previous personal record on the Mt. SAC course.  For those of you who haven’t visited Mt. SAC there’s a reason why “Mt.” is part of the title.  The course has three VERY steep mini-mountains the runners go up and down with reckless abandon.  Emma ended with a 20:14 and placed 24th!!  This is an incredible accomplishment for a freshman who had not previously considered cross country until this past summer!  I can’t wait to see what Emma will do next 😉

Congratulations on a spectacular season, Emma!!!

Volleyball Ends Season Competitive

What a difference a year makes!  Last night the Tigers played their best match of the season and tonight the girls continued their momentum against a very tough Oxnard High School team.  While the bus ride and excitement of Monday may have slowed our team down in game one (13-25), the Tigers bounced back to catch the Yellow Jackets in game two and create a point-by-point challenge in game three!  Our Tigers continued to amaze on so very many rallies!  At the end of the day the scores would be 17-25, 22-25, in game two and three respectively.  However, the crowing point of this season is that with hard work, dedication and great team chemistry, amazing things can happen!  From being at the bottom of the Prep League last year to competing in two CIF-SS Playoff games this year our Tigers have come a very, very long way!

Congratulations Volleyball on a fabulous season!!!

Road Trip!!

Volleyball Wins in Four!

Varsity Volleyball came to play tonight!!  The Tigers truly had their best team effort of the year and then some!!!  Game one the Tigers might have been a little nervous, but came from behind to nearly close 24-26.  Game two our confidence began to build behind Meagan MacPhee’s ’14 tremendous blocking!!  The Tigers won 25-19!!  Natalie Martinez ’15 had the best game of her short career and fired several kills down at the Raiders!  Freshman Michelle Aguirre made a HUGE statement as she served points 18-23 to put the Tigers ahead for good.  Game three 25-15!!  Game four got close, but our confidence was soaring!!  Lili Lim ’13 had her best game of the year pounding 6 kills!  Carmen Costa ’14 continued to be the hardest hitter on the floor and would eventually end with 22 kills!!  Yes, 22!!!!!  Meagan ended with 9 kills and 5 HUGE blocks!  Natalie had 8 kills! And, none of this all could happen without the brilliant setting of Cate Hurley ’13 who ended with 46 assists!!  Final score 25-22 and the Tigers are heading to Oxnard tomorrow!!!

Go CIF Tigers!!!
